I lent this book to a friend, a high level investment banker. He was certain he wouldn't like it and that everything Les Gold had to say, would be wrong. He brought it back to me telling me he couldn't wait for Les to write another book. He said Les gave him courage and knowledge to just follow his instincts. "A great read"

In the first half of the book Les describes what his early life was like, having to overcome an abusive father and build his business. He expounds on what attitudes and skills you have to have to succeed in business. These are simple and are available in many other books: don't let others determine your level of worth, know your business/industry as much as you can, and always look for opportunity. But by linking these lesson to his life experience, he turns the first half into a motivational book that is well worth reading.

The second half he focuses more on the pawn business and lessons learned there. Half are the same lessons presented in the first half of the book and the other basically focuses on how to negotiate, being honest, putting family first, and treating your employees like family to motivate them. It just falls flat, there are only so many ways you can talk about making the business about family and being honest and they get tired relatively quick. The specifics just are not there to make it that interesting.

If you are buying to find out specifics about the pawn business, you will probably be disappointed, you are better off listening to a conference call from one of the publicly traded pawn companies. If you are looking for a companion to the tv show, you will probably be disappointed in that he tells a lot about his own upbringing but leaves out a lot with his own son and daughter. Its not the same companion book to the show as Rick Harrison's. But if you want a motivational book on achieving more, the first half is at least worth reading.

I have always enjoyed the show "Hardcore Pawn" and leapt at the chance to purchase the story of the man behind the scenes. It's a whirlwind history of his journey into pawnbroking and some valuable lessons on life and the business world. It was over much too quickly. I would have bargained him down to $7.25 given that it's just over 200 pages, but there was a great deal of value into the work and his insights into the pawn industry and the nature of humanity. Yes, would recommend (especially to business majors in college).

I loved Rick Harris' book from Pawn Stars, and we're fans of both shows. But Rick and Les are truly themselves on screen and off. That's something I both appreciate and respect.

Les is sharing lessons he has learned. Wisdom he has gained, and knowledge he has attained in the business world. And you can apply it to not only your own business, but to your life as well. Whether you want to achieve wealth, success, or just feeling like you're an integral part of where you work and who you are when you come home - Les covers it all. Fan of the show, and a huge admirer of who Les Gold is.

My connection to this book was simple. I was a pawnbroker for 30 years of my professional career. That said, I found it both refreshing and enlightening that the author went well beyond tales in the trenches from the three balled tribe. Life as a pawnbroker is always challenging, usually crazy, and occasionally unpredictable. Yet, Mr. Gold strives to, and in my eyes accomplishes, pointing out the human side of any business or profession. Sure, there are plenty of zany stories in the book regarding the world of pawnbroking. But the bigger underlying theme is sage street-level advice on how to think accurately and productively to benefit your career, your life, and those around you. Many in the pawnshop industry possess this knowledge and utilize it daily. It is the nature of what we do. You will find it very valuable that this author is willing to share his wisdom and experience with you. A worthy read for anyone willing to step outside of themselves for a moment to take a look at the bigger picture we are all involved in.

Anyone who enjoys Hard Core Pawn will appreciate Les Gold's history of the company and his keys to success. While his advice is sound, it has all been said by others so many times and in so many ways (believe in yourself, face your fears, build your reputation etc.). Still, for those who have not heard this message, Les's book will enlighten and entertain.

The price was so cheap for this book! The shipping did take some time, however, we ordered with plenty of time to spare for Christmas, and received it without an issue. This purchase was a gift for a huge Les Gold fan, and was a big success. The book now is prominently displayed on our happy recipient's bookshelf.
